Our Story
Sowbaranika School of Fashion & Costume began with a question its founder had been asked too many times: where do young designers go to actually learn the craft — not the slide deck about the craft?

After more than two decades dressing actors, building costume worlds for films, and working backstage at India's most exacting runways, Sowbaranika opened a school that taught fashion the way it is practiced. Hands first. Concept second. Critique always.

SSFC is based in Thoraipakkam, Chennai, with active studios, an incubation arm, and a community of students that now stretches across age groups, languages, and ambitions. From ten years old to sixty. From first stitch to working label.

Six things you will not find at most fashion schools
Built in Incubation
Not a separate programme. Not an add-on. The same building, the same faculty, the same calendar. Students do not graduate looking for a label to join — they graduate launching their own.
A founder who still works
Sowbaranika continues to design, consult, and dress for film and runway. The school is not a retirement project. The classroom is briefed on what is happening in the industry that morning.
Teacher Training Pipeline
SSFC runs India's first dedicated Fashion Teacher Training diploma. We do not just train designers; we train the educators who will teach the next generation — addressing a gap the industry has been quietly suffering for years.
Age 10 - 60
The Junior Diploma admits children from age ten. The Teacher Training programme welcomes second-career educators at any age. There is no fashion school in India with this range. We did not build it for marketing. We built it because fashion does not check ID at the door.
AI inside the studio
Generative tools, trend forecasting platforms, and AI-led pattern intelligence are not optional electives at SSFC. They are integrated from semester one. Students leave fluent in the tools their international peers are using.
